How to Remove Bobbles From Jumpers Without Ruining Them

Bobbles, also called pills, are small balls of fibre that form where fabric rubs: under the arms, on the sides and on the cuffs. They make a good jumper look old, but in most cases they can be removed safely in a few minutes.

The quickest way: a fabric shaver

A fabric shaver trims the bobbles off at the surface without pulling the yarn. Here is how to use one:

  1. Lay the jumper flat on a table or ironing board and smooth it out.
  2. Test on a hidden area first, such as inside the hem.
  3. Move the shaver lightly in small circles. Don't press down.
  4. Empty the fluff chamber regularly so it keeps cutting cleanly.
  5. Finish with a lint roller to pick up loose fluff.

Our Rechargeable Fabric Shaver and Bobble Remover has a protective mesh between the blades and the fabric and works on jumpers, blankets and sofa fabric.

Take care with delicate knits

Loose, chunky or very fine knits can snag. Go slowly, keep the shaver flat, and stop if it starts to catch the yarn.

How to stop bobbles coming back

  • Wash jumpers inside out, on a gentle or wool cycle.
  • Don't overfill the machine, so clothes rub less.
  • Wash knits away from rough fabrics like denim and towels.
  • Dry flat instead of tumble drying.
